'You Hear Georgia'
Hailed as "the reigning heavyweight champions of Southern rock", Atlanta based Blackberry Smoke celebrate their 20th anniversary with a magnificent tribute to their home with 'You Hear Georgia'. Produced by Dave Cobb (John Prine, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson), the upcoming album is inspired by and a celebration of the South and all it has to offer. In true Blackberry Smoke fashion, the band masterfully weaves through genre, with everything from Southern Rock anthems about overcoming preconceived notions to life lessons wrapped in heartfelt Americana. They bring a few friends along for the ride, with guest features from Jamey Johnson and Warren Haynes (The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule).
You Hear Georgia is Blackberry Smoke's seventh album, following 2018's critically acclaimed 'Find A Light', which debuted at #1 on Billboard Country Album Sales and Americana/Folk Album Sales Chart, and its companion acoustic EP 'The Southern Ground Sessions'.
'Lonesome For A Livin' (featuring Jamey Johnson) is as old school country as it gets. Great storytelling, pedal steel and plenty of heartache. The perfect combination for this old country classic.
The pace lifts back up when 'All Rise Again' (featuring Warren Haynes), brings back the thunder with a full on and funky sound. This has a wonderful uplifting chorus with some great guitar throughout as you'd expect with these guys. Next we have 'Old Enough To Know' which slows the pace for a heartfelt track, full of reminiscing. Beautiful slide complements the song perfectly.
'Morningside' lifts the pace back up with a heavier and determined track, before 'All Over The Road' brings us an upbeat and lively tune that will have that head bobbing and those feet tapping in no time.
We draw to a close this latest studio album with a track called 'Old Scarecrow' which builds throughout with an edge that is likely to erupt at any second. It has a great sing-a-long chorus, and again some sumptuous slide guitar.
Blackberry Smoke are one of my personal favourite bands and have been for quite a few years now. I haven't always liked everything that they have released over the time, but this latest release delivers a wonderful combination of musical styles that seem to fit perfectly together to deliver an album that only Blackberry Smoke can create. There are many bands in this southern style of music, but few do it as well as these guys, they really are the closest you can get to a modern day equivallent of The Allman Brothers.
Now with the addition of a few new faces, together there is even more of a delivery of just damn good music. TFM gives 'You Hear Georgia' 9.5/10. These southern rockers have delivered an exceptional album. Go buy it, stream it, download it and share it, but just make sure you give it a listen with a beer in hand and enjoy it. 'Live It Down' is a rockin' and groove laden opener with a big chorus. A great way to kick off this new release. Next up is the title track 'You Hear Georgia', which is just a wonderful tune. Sumptuous slide with a southern vibe.
'Hey Delilah' is one of Blackberry Smoke's fun tunes. It has an addictive beat, and is just a feel good romp with clever and fun lyrics, a bit like 'Ain't Got The Blues' from 'The Whippoorwill' album. Next up is 'Ain't The Same', which is a fabulous free flowing track with a wonderful tone throughout.
