Tom Killner

'The Church House Sessions'

EP Review

Recorded during lockdown in August 2020, 'The Church House Sessions' EP features 4 of Tom Killner’s most hard hitting, fan favourite tracks, from his critically acclaimed back catalogue.

The Church House (Sheffield, UK) is a regular spot to find Tom Killner and his band playing their own brand of soul infused southern rock, and this was the chosen venue to record this power EP, ahead of an acoustic release of new material scheduled for early 2021.

'The Church House Sessions' features Tom Killner (Guitar & Vocals), Oliver Tallent (Bass), Richard Hunter (Drums) and Wesley Brook (Keys), recorded, produced and distributed by Coal Bunker Records.

'When Love Comes For You' is just a funky soul infused opener with a wonderful change of tempo in the middle before we are again taken on this express train of an opening track. This is followed by 'Devil Woman', a slower and funky number. A real foot tapping head bobbing tune.

'Don't Waste My Time' is a definite contender for any 70's blaxploitation movie. Funky with a heavier vibe and plenty of wah pedal, before we end with 'Midnight Call', which is just a guitar driven blues injected rocker and is a fabulous end to a fabulous EP.

Hailing from Rotherham (UK), Tom’s musical journey began at a young age, and he was wowing audiences with his blistering live performances in pubs and clubs around South Yorkshire by his early teenage years. Writing and performing were second nature to Tom, culminating in his first major album release, 'Hard Road', at the age of just 19.

Tom’s second album, Live, came early 2017, featuring a selection of covers that influenced his musical style and character, followed soon after in 2018 by 'Get Back Up', an album of originals released to rave reviews world-wide.

As national lockdown owing to COVID-19 halted plans for touring and live shows this year, Tom Killner and his band took the opportunity to produce this EP, available on all streaming platforms from October 9th, 2020.

This is just an honest and endearing EP that gives us a fabulous glimpse at a Tom Killner live performance, and if this EP is anything to go on, when lockdown restrictions are over, he should be one of the first musicians that you check their tour schedule. 'The Church House Sessions' is just a wonderful snippet from an obvious talent, backed by a wonderful band. TFM gives 'The Church House Sessions' 4.75/5, an excellent addition to your collection.
